The Television War Artist

Len Breen

The old guard of war artists uniquely illustrated and recorded the visual and sensory dimension of conflict in many shades of suffering and celebration.

But the dominant representations of the 'Iraq Wars' of the recent decades was crucially unlike anything they ever portrayed.

Mediated by the information providers, post-modern warfare has become essentially a virtual war of montage and collage of images and meanings, all streaming across and refashioned in the ether. So we saw media representation of the war but never the war itself. For us, for all intents and purpose, it never really happened.

This anthology comprises a selection of drawings by a first hand observer, a 'soi-disant, television, war artist'.
